Uzbekistan: Heritage in Motion Exhibition explores the development of Uzbekistan’s Islamic heritage from the period immediately before the eighth-century Islamic conquest of Central Asia through to the present day. The exhibition examines how this legacy continues to shape the country’s culture, creativity and modern national identity.
Presented by the Museum of Islamic Art in partnership with the Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation, the exhibition links historical objects, ideas, materials and creative practices with their continuing relevance.
Four exhibition themes
- Beyond the River introduces the lands of present-day Uzbekistan as a culturally varied crossroads before the Islamic conquest.
- Building Earth and Empire examines Uzbekistan’s historic built environment, brick construction and the Samanid and Timurid periods.
- Architects of Thought and Image presents figures associated with Islamic intellectual history through manuscripts and interactive activities.
- Legacies of Clay and Thread follows ceramics, dress, jewellery and textile production, particularly silk, from earlier periods into modern times.
The exhibition may suit visitors interested in Islamic history, Central Asian architecture, manuscripts, traditional crafts and the relationship between heritage and national identity.

The exhibition runs from 3 September to 28 November 2026 at the Sheikh Saoud Al Thani Temporary Exhibitions Gallery on the first floor of the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha.
